the pearl at the polls

February 18, 2011

Today Ugandans are turning up at the polls for national elections.  It is widely expected that the incumbent, President Yoweri Museveni, will extend his stay in power to 30 years.   But just in case Ugandans are getting any ideas from the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, the government has got it covered.  It was recently leaked that the the state-run Uganda Communications Commission has ordered cell phone companies to intercept text messages containing the following words:

– Egypt

– bullet

– people power

– Tunisia

– Mubarak

– dictator

– teargas

– army

– police

– gun

– Ben Ali

– UPDF (Ugandan military)

Good old Yoweri, on the other hand, has reportedly been calling cell phones across the country this morning with a recorded message stating,

“Vote YK Museveni, the old man with a hat.”
